What Is Model Quantization?

Model quantization reduces the numerical precision used to represent an AI model’s weights and, in some methods, other values used during processing. Using fewer bits can reduce memory requirements and make larger models more practical to run locally.

Quantized models often use 8-bit or 4-bit representations in place of higher-precision values. These numbers describe how values are represented, not how many parameters the model has. A quantized model generally retains its parameter count while using less memory to store its weights.

The tradeoff is that reducing precision can affect output quality or accuracy. The effect depends on the model, the quantization method, and the task. Quantization can also improve speed, but a smaller model file does not guarantee faster generation on every system.

Before downloading a quantized model, check that your model runner supports its format and quantization method. Allow memory for the model’s working data as well as its weights, then test it with tasks that reflect your intended use. Choose a version that balances memory use, compatibility, and acceptable results.
